Jr. B Secures Win Over Middlesex Community College

As the Jr. B hockey team took their home ice against Middlesex Community College (MCC) it did not take long for the Wolverines to take the lead, and hold onto it for the remainder of the game. Zach Pettingill (Scarborough, ME) scored five minutes into the game with an assist from Billy Smith (Boston, MA). Middlesex has a close shot bouncing off the post, which BA collected and took down the ice. Brian McKeown (Scarborough, ME) took a shot, which bounced over the goalie to take a 2-0 lead. Of the next face-off McKeown extended the lead as he scored with help from Evan Gray (Norwell, MA). As MCC took a penalty shortly after, Ethan Charny (Chicago, IL) worked the puck in front of the net for a well-placed wrist shot. A few minutes later Matt Driscoll (Dedham, MA) took a shot from the point, which Steve Trychon (Sterling, MA) tipped in for Bridgton’s next goal. MCC finally netted a goal to get on the scoreboard, followed by Charny’s second goal of the night assisted by Johnny Sheil (Narragansett, RI). At the end of the first period, BA held onto a 6-1 lead.

In the second, Craig Standish (New York, NY) finished a feed from Pettingill for a 7-1 lead. MCC had a run of unanswered goals in an attempt at a comeback. With the gap lessened to 7-4, Pettingill put an end to their scoring with a goal of his own with assists from Trychon and Gray.

Bridgton held the lead for the remainder of the game as McKeown fed the puck to Driscoll who scored off a shot from the point. Standish netted his second goal of the night on a power play with an assist to Bryson Weberg (Parksville, BC). Charny then scored his third and the final goal of the night unassisted. MCC was able to sneak one last shot past goaltender John Busa (Billerica, MA) but it was not enough as Bridgton took the 11-5 win. In the game, Busa stopped 35 of the 40 shots that came his way.

Coach Meserve was happy with the game commenting “We had a great first and third periods. We used our systems well and put a lot of pucks on the net. Guys like Evan Gray and Steve Trychon did an outstanding job getting the pucks down low.”

Jr. A Overtakes NE Wolves

The Jr. A hockey team traveled to Waterville Valley, NH to take on the NE Wolves for a third time this season. After an hour long delay for a hard hit by Bridgton that broke a pane of glass, the game resumed. After a hard fought game, Bridgton finally earned a win against the Wolves with a score of 5-3. Jr. B Beats SNHU on the Road

On Saturday the Jr. B hockey team traveled to Manchester, NH to take on Southern New Hampshire University’s club hockey team and took a 4-3 win. Billy Smith (Boston, MA) netted the first goal for Bridgton with assists from Ethan Charny (Chicago, IL) and Steve Trychon (Sterling, MA). Zach Pettingill was next to score with assists from Bryson Weberg (Parksville, BC) and Matt Pagano (Cranston, RI). Trychon then netted his own goal with assists from Smith and Pettingill. Smith then scored his second for the game-winning goal with assists from Pagano and Cory Durkin (Narragansett, RI). John Busa played in net saving 37 of the 49 shots he saw.

Coach Meserve commented after the game, “We started slow and finished strong. In this game we had a great second and third period. We put a lot of traffic in front of their goalie and put the pucks on net.”

Jr. A Earns Hard Fought Win Over NSA

The Jr. A team took the ice for what promised to be a close, hard fought game against the National Sports Academy (NSA). For the first period, play was evenly matched, remaining scoreless until the last two minutes of the period. With NSA in the penalty box, Jimmy Magrath (Medfield, MA) and Colin Edwards (Winchester, MA) exchanged passes in front of the net before Edwards tallied the first goal of the game for BA.

The second period was played in a similar style to the first. The play was back and forth and it seemed as if BA would hold their 1-0 lead heading into the third. With one minute on the board, NSA snuck a goal past BA goaltender Jordi Vaan Gaal (RyMenam, Belgium) to tie things up. BA was still looking to hold the lead at the end of the second, as Dylan Larrow (Ludlow, MA) netted a rebound off a shot from the point taken by Cam Kennedy (Lynn, MA).

NSA was looking for a comeback early in the third period as they score the game tying goal right away. It looked as if the game would enter into overtime, until Ryan Connors (Marshfield, MA) finished a pass from Magrath on another power play to take the lead. While NSA pulled their goalie for a man up advantage, Sam Scannell (Glastonbury, CT) buried a pass from Connors with just under a second left in the game.

Bridgton Steals Last Minute 6-4 Win

This past week Bridgton took the ice against prep school rival Kents Hill. Kents Hill was first on the board with a goal early in the game. Ryan Connors (Marshfield, MA) answered back with Bridgton's first goal assisted by Jimmy Magrath (Medfeld, MA) and Colin Edwards (Winchester, MA). With the score all tied up at the end of the first period, Kents Hill took the momentum going into the second frame. With three goals unanswered, it appeared as if they had secured the win going into the third period with a 4-1 lead. Mike Marchianda (Hyde Park, MA) collected a feed from Steve Bellew (Hingham, MA) for a power play goal. In the same shift, Marchianda brought the puck around the net and put up a fight with the help of Sam Scannell (Glastonbury, CT) to score his second goal of the game, Bridgton's third. With under two minutes left in the game, Alex Pompeo (Hingham, MA) fired a shot on net and Magrath collected the rebound to score the game tying goal. Bridgton them kept the momentum up as Edwards carried the puck down the ice and beat the goalie over his left shoulder with just over a minute left in the game to take a 5-4 lead. Kents Hill pulled their goalie with thirty seconds on the clock in an attempt to take the game into over time. Pompeo cleared the puck to Kevin Seeley (Berkely, MA) who netted a cross ice, empty net goal to secure the 6-4 win for Bridgton Academy.

Bridgton Sweeps Rothesay Netherwood

Bridgton Academy took to the ice for a pair of games against Rothesay Netherwood this weekend. Right away in game one, Bridgton came out on fire. In the first period, Tommy Graham (Medfield, MA) capitalized on a power play with a well placed wrist shot to beat the goalie on the side and take a 1-0 lead. Later in the first period, Colin Edwards (Winchester, MA) took his time to move the puck in front of the goalie and fire a shot for Bridgton's second goal of the game with assists from John Sartell (Wakefield, MA) and Graham. Marco Spisso (Highland Falls, NY) extended the lead before the end of the period as Barry O'Neil (Falmouth, MA) fed Spisso a pass for a shorthanded breakaway. Spisso beat the goalie to score and take a 3-0 lead going into the second period. Jimmy Magrath (Medfield, MA) did not waste any time in the second period before scoring the fourth and final goal for Bridgton Academy as the puck trickled over the line to secure the win. Rothesay never gave up scoring two goals on power plays, but was not able to secure a comeback as Bridgton took the 4-2 win.

In the second game, Bridgton was the first to score again. Billy Boudreau (Newburyport, MA) capitalized on a feed from Edwards to take a 1-0 lead. It was not long however, before Rothesay answered back to tie things up. On Bridgon's next rush down the ice it seemed as if Bridgton would take back the lead as Mike Marchionda (Hyde Park, MA) ripped a shot that hit the cross bar. Just a few minuted later Silas Rainville (Franklin, MA) set up Marchionda to score a shorthanded goal, this time taking a 2-1 lead. Edwards netted another goal to increase the lead with an assist from Magrath. After taking a penalty, Rothesay was prepared to take advantage of Bridgton's man down disadvantage. Kevin Seeley (Berkely, MA) broke the puck out of the defensive zone to set up Rainville who scored the fourth goal of the game for Bridgton. Rothesay was able to net one more goal, and down 4-2 with under a minute left in the game they pulled their goalie in an attempt to tie up the game. Rothesay attempted to break the puck out of the zone, but Edwards collected the puck and put away an empty netter to secure the 5-2 win.

Spisso Plays 100th Game For Bridgton Academy

Jr. B Captures OT Win

The Jr. B hockey team traveled to North Yarmouth Academy this weekend and secured a 4-3 OT win.

After initially going down 1-0, Brian McKeown (Scarborough, ME) tied up the score with a power play goal. Johnny Sheil (Narragansett, RI) and Dusty Burke (Sherborn, MA) worked the puck down low to McKeown who circled out and beat the goalie with a well placed wrist shot. NYA came back strong with two more goals to take a 3-1 lead.

Cory Durkin (Narragansett, RI) lessened the gap to one with another BA power play goal. Matt Pagano (Cranston, RI) fed a pass to Durkin who beat NYA's goaltender with a wrist shot. It didn't take long for Durkin to net his second goal of the game and tie things up. Steve Trychon (Sterling, MA) and Bryson Weberg (Parksville, BC) worked the puck to the net where Durkin was able to capitalize and bury it deep.

With the score tied at 3-3, the game went into overtime. Burke scored the game winning goal just 16 seconds into overtime with assists from Durkin and Sheil. Sheil was able to move the puck to Durkin who fired a low wrist shot on goal. Burke was able to collect the rebound to put it away to win the game.

John Busa (Billerica, MA) was strong in net saving 27 of 30 shots in the game.

Coach Meserve was happy after the game commenting, "We had a great team win
tonight. We had low numbers and the 13 guys we had played like warriors. I couldn't of been anymore proud of the team tonight."

Up next, the team will travel to Manchester, NH where they will take on Southern New Hampshire University's club team on February 18th at 7:30 P.M.

Jr. B Loses A Pair To Boston Jr. Warriors

The Jr. B hockey team took the ice for a two game series against the Boston Jr. Warriors who proved to be a tough opponent. In the first game of the night, Bridgton suffered a 6-3 loss to the Warriors. In the second game, Bridgton was looking to split the series. However, after a very physical game, the Warriors came out on top with a 5-2 win.

In the first game, Bridgton was down and tallied three goals to try and lessen the gap. Brian McKeown (Scarborough, ME) collected a feed from Johnny Sheil (Narragansett, RI) for the Wolverines first goal of the night. Cory Durkin (Narragansett, RI) netted his first goal of the season unassisted on a breakaway. McKeown then redirected a shot for the Wolverines final goal of the game with asssists from Steve Trychon (Sterling, MA) and Matt Pagano (Cranston, RI). Mike Gendreau (Medford, MA) played in net stopping 29 of 35 shots.

After the game Coach Meserve commented, "The first period was a tough one. We didn't start playing our game until the third and just ran out of time. "

On Saturday when the two teams met again, Bridgton was looking to redeem themselves. McKeown, Trychon, and Pagano paired up for a second time as McKeown netted the first goal of the game. Billy Smith (Boston, MA) capitalized on a feed from Danny MacInnes (Plymouth, MA) and Dusty Burke (Sherborn, MA) for the Wolverines second and final goal of the competition. John Busa (Billerica, MA) stopped 38 of 43 shots between the pipes for the Wolverines.

After the game, Coach Meserve noted, "It was one of our better efforts. We played very physical against a very skilled team. We utilized our systems intelligently and played with great intensity. The unsung heroes today were guys like, Chris Mini (Everett, MA), Marquise Cotten (Washington, DC) and Evan Gray (Norwell, MA)....they were warriors down low and threw their bodies around. There was no reason to hang our heads today."

Up next the Wolverines will travel to North Yarmouth Academy to play Saturday at 3:30 P.M.

Jr. A Goes 2-1 In Northwood Tournament

To wrap up the week, the Jr. A hockey team traveled to Lake Placid, NY to participate in the Northwood Tournament. In their first game, the Wolverines faced off against the Valley Forge Minutemen and won 5-1. Colin Edwards (Winchester, MA) started the scoring with an assist from Brendan Glynn (Quincy, MA). Glynn then netted his own goal with help from Jimmy Magrath (Medfield, MA) and Ryan Connors (Marshfield, MA). Steve Bellew (Hingham, MA) also netted a goal with assists from (Zach Wells Hyannis, MA) and Marco Spisso (Highland Falls, NY). Magrath and Edwards secured the win with the final two goals of the contest. Mike Gendreau (Medford, MA) played in net stopping 15 shots.

In the second game, the Wolverines fell short as they lost 3-1 to the Northwood School. Magrath scored the lone goal for Bridgton with an assist from Sam Scannell (Glastonbury, CT). Pat Farrington (Sandwich, MA) played in net with 30 saves in the loss.

Looking to make up for the previous loss, the Wolverines came out strong against St. Francis and walked away with a 3-1 win. Cam Kennedy (Lynn, MA) was first on the board for Bridgton with assists from Scannell and Connors. Mike Marchionda (Hyde Park, MA) tallied a goal with help from Kevin Seeley (Berkley, MA). Magrath netted Bridgton’s final goal of the tournament with assists from Bellew and Edwards. Jordi Van Gaal (RyMenam, Belgium) stopped 33 shots between the pipes.

Jr. A Takes Back Fabello Cup

The Jr. A hockey team traveled to Hebron Academy yesterday in an attempt to win back the Fabello Cup. Each year Bridgton and Hebron compete to win the best of three, and keep the Cup for a year.

In the first game of the night, Zach Wells (Hyannis, MA) scored five minutes into the game to give Bridgton the lead. Once Wells gave the Wolverines the lead, they never let up. Shortly into the second period, Wells scored again for a 2-0 lead. Colin Edwards (Winchester, MA) then put up two goals in one shift to secure a 4-0 lead. Hebron was able to capitalize and sneak in a goal, but Brendan Glynn (Quincy, MA) answered back with another tally for the Wolverines. Jimmy Magrath (Medfield, MA) also scored for Bridgton, however Hebron attempted a comeback with three quick goals. With a score of 6-4 Hebron pulled their goaltender for a man up advantage, but Magrath was able to find the open net for a 7-4 win.

In an additional 20 minute match up to determine the winner of the Fabello Cup, both teams came out ready to win. Magrath was the first on the board giving the Wolverines the lead. Hebron answered back, followed by a Bridgton penalty. Hebron took charge of the power play, but Tommy Graham (Medfield, MA) was able to block a shot from the point and feed it to Kevin Seeley (Berkely, MA) who capitalized on the breakaway and netted the go ahead goal. With less than two minutes to play, Bridgton appeared to have the win. Hebron, however, was not ready to give up netting one last goal to tie things up. After one scoreless five minute overtime, Steve Bellew (Hingham, MA) ended the game just a few minutes into the second overtime to take back the Fabello Cup.

The team will be back on the ice this weekend as they travel to Lake Placid, NY to participate in the Northwood Tournament.

Middlebury Overtakes Jr. B

The Jr. B hockey team boarded the bus for the long trip to Middlebury, VT yesterday to take on their J.V. squad. Although BA had some scoring opportunities, Middlebury was able to walk away with the 6-3 victory.

Ethan Charny (Chicago, IL) collected a turnover created by Zach Pettingill (Scarborough, ME) and walked it in to beat the goalie on his low blocker side with a well placed wrist shot. Charny also tallied an assist as he and Billy Smith (Boston, MA) set up Cody Norton (Essex, VT) for the Wolveirne's second goal of the contest. Danny MacInnes (Plymouth, MA) scored the third and final goal for BA unassisted as the stole the puck from a Middlebury defensemen and walked in alone for a gorgeous backhanded shot under the crossbar.

Mike Gendreau (Medford, MA) started in net for the Wolveirnes saving 20 of 25 shots. John Busa (Billerica, MA) also saw time between the pipes stopping 11 of 12 shots that came his way.

Coach Meserve commented after the game, "Not one of our best efforts. Maybe it was the long bus ride, or maybe the guys were intimidated by the facility, but we didn't have it tonight."

After a short break, the Jr. B team will be back in action February 4th at 2:00 P.M. as they travel to North Yarmouth Academy for a rematch.

Jr. A Sweeps Ulysse Prep

Bridgton and Ulysse Prep took the ice Sunday morning for a second contest this weekend. After the close, physical game the previous night, both teams came out on fire. Bridgton was the first on the board as Jimmy Magrath (Medfield, MA) scored with assists from Brendan Glynn (Quincy, MA) and Colin Edwards (Winchester, MA). It didn't take long however for Ulysse to answer back with two goals in a row. Towards the end of the first period, Magrath tied up the game with an assist from Edwards.

Ulysse came out strong with the first goal in the second period, but Bridgton answered back as Ryan Connors (Marshfield, MA) netted a power play goal with an assist from Steve Bellew (Hingham, MA). With back and forth play, Ulysse was next to score. While it seemed like they would enter the third period with a one goal advantage, Kevin Seeley (Berkley, MA) was able to tie up the game with help from Tommy Graham (Medfield, MA) with one second left on the board.

In the third period, Bridgton was determined to take the lead. Alex Pompeo (Hingham, MA) scored with a well placed wrist shot, assisted by Edwards for a one goal advantage. A few minutes later, Magrath netted his third goal of the game unassisted to increase Bridgton's lead. Right off the next face-off, Zach Wells (Hyannis, MA) finished a feed from Conors for the Wolverine's seventh goal of the contest. Ulysse never backed down, netting a goal of their own in a similar style, off the very next face-off. The intensity increased a notch, and Edwards fed the puck to Glynn who buried a wrist shot as he was crossing the net. Ulysse was able to sneak one last goal past Bridgton's goalie Jordi Van Gaal (RyMenam,Belgium), but Bridgton walked away with a big 8-6 win.

This Wednesday the team will be on the road as they travel to Hebron Academy to play at 4:00 P.M.

Jr. A Dominates Ulysse Prep

The Jr. A hockey faced off against Canadian based Ulysse Prep in what promised to be a close match up. For the first period, the score stayed tied at zero. In the second period, Tommy Graham (Medfield, MA) collected the puck for a breakaway and netted the first goal of the game shorthanded. Bridgton held the lead 1-0 going into the third period. With physical play for the last twenty minutes, Bridgton was fired up. Marco Spisso (Highland Falls, NY) fed Ryan Connors (Marshfield, MA) the puck who advanced Bridgton's lead to 2-0. Bridgton continued to dominate, with Sam Scannell (Glastonbury, CT) burying a pass from Alex Pompeo (Hingham, MA). Spisso secured the win with an unassisted shorthanded goal. Ulysse attempted a comeback with two quick goals, but Bridgton stayed strong to win 4-2. The two teams will take the ice again Sunday morning at 11:00 A.M.

Jr. B Drops Close Game to NYA

The Jr. B hockey team took the ice for a close match up against NYA. The score remained 0-0 after the first period, with Bridgton taking a 1-0 lead early in the second period. Bridgton held onto their lead until late in the second period when NYA was able to tie things up. Ultimately NYA was able to take the lead and secure the 2-1 win over Bridgton. Big Weekend Ahead!

This weekend both the Jr. A and Jr. B team will have a busy schedule. Both teams will be playing at home, so if you are in the area make sure to stop by! On Saturday afternoon, the Jr. B team will kick things off with a 3:00 P.M. game against North Yarmouth Academy. The Jr. A team will follow at 7:00 P.M. against Ulysses Prep. The Jr. A team will be back on the ice against Ulysses Prep Sunday at 11:00 A.M. As a side note, the Jr. B game that was scheduled for Sunday at 2:00 P.M. against Walpole Express has been cancelled.

Jr. B Hockey Competes in Eastern Jr. Hockey League Showcase

This past weekend the Jr. B hockey team traveled to Marlboro, MA to participate in the Eastern Junior Hockey League Showcase. The team played four games in 48 hours, resulting in a 0-1-3 record.

In the first game, Bridgton faced off against the Brewster Bulldogs and tied 3-3. Dusty Burke started off Bridgton’s scoring on a power play with assists from Matt Pagano and John Sheil after the three battled out the defense to net the puck. Pagano then tallied his own goal with assists from Cory Durkin and Burke off a shot from the point and a good screen from Sheil in front. Ethan Charny netted Bridgton’s final goal of the game off a rebound set up by Kevin Seely and Matt Driscoll. John Busa played in net stopping 36 of 39 shots.

The second game against the Northern Mass Cyclones resulted in a 0-0 tie. Coach Meserve commented the game was “Very physical, with great effort and intensity.” At the end of three periods Brendan Gaetjins stopped all 22 shots that came his way.

The third game also resulted in a 3-3 tie against the New England Huskies in what Coach Meserve noted was the “Best game of the weekend, with outstanding intensity and teamwork.” Zach Pettingill scored the first goal of the night with assists from Burke and Chris Mini. Dan MacInnes tallied the Wolverines second goal of the night with assists from Billy Smith and Pettingill. Burke netted the final goal of the night with assists from Sheil and Brian McKeowen. Mike Gendreau played in net stopping 33 of 36 shots.

In the final game of the showcase Bridgton suffered their first loss to the Metro Moose with a score of 3-1. Sheil scored the Wolverines only goal of the game with assists from Burke and Craig Standish. Standish dumped the puck deep where Burke was able to beat everyone and feed it to Sheil in front of the net. Busa played in net stopping 41 of 44 shots. Coach Meserve was positive about the final game of the showcase commenting “In the last game the guys were spent physically and emotionally, but gave it everything they had.”

Jr. A Enters Winter Break With A Win

The Jr. A team ended the first semester with a big 4-2 win over the Hill Academy. The team hit the ice hard in an effort to make up for their loss the previous night, and did just that. Mike Marchionda (Hyde Park, MA) led the scoring with two goals in the game. Ryan Connors (Marshfield, MA) and Billy Boudreau (Newburyport, MA) added the last two goals for BA. Jordi Van Gaal (RyMenam, Belguim) had a big night in goal saving 30 of 32 shots. The team enters break with a winning record of 13-6-2.

Jr. A Falls to NE Stars

The Jr. A hockey team remained on campus for one last home game before winter break. As they faced off against the NE Stars, it promised to be a close match up. While the Wolverines kept in the game for the most part, they ultimately fell to the Stars 4-2. Jimmy Magrath (Medfield, MA) tallied Bridgton's first goal of the night as he rebounded Alex Pompeo's (Hingham, MA) shot from Steve Bellew (Hingham, MA). The Stars tied things up with an unsuccessful penalty kill by Bridgton with just over seven minutes to play in the first period. Pompeo tallied his second assist of the night as he set up Brendan Glynn (Quincy, MA) who flipped the puck over the Star's goalie to tie it up 2-2. Going into the third period, the NE Stars were able to pull ahead to secure the 4-2 win.

Jr. B Has A Busy Weekend

Friday Night the Jr. B hockey team took on the University of New Hampshire’s club team for the second time this season. The game had a good start to the game with Billy Smith (Boston, MA) scored the first goal of the game off assists from Craig Standish (New York, NY) and Dusty Burke (Sherborn, MA) to give BA a 1-0 lead. UNH answered back to tie things up, followed by another Bridgton goal. Matt Driscoll (Dedham, MA) capitalized on a feed from Zach Pettingill (Scarborough, ME) and Marquise Cotten (Washington, DC). Bridgton could not hold onto the 2-1 lead as UNH fought back to secure the 4-2 win. John Busa (Billerica, MA) played in net stopping 38 of 42 shots.

Coach Meserve commented after the game, “Overall we just didn't work as a team. Teamwork is something we have preached all year and we just didn't work together as a unit."

Bridgton was on the ice the following night as they took on the Academie St. Louis. With a fire that was missing the previous night, Bridgton fought the whole game to come out on top with a 3-0 win. Brian McKeown (Scarborough, ME) led the scoring effort as he capitalized on a breakaway from a long stretch pass from Cory Durkin (Narragansett, RI) and Driscoll. Driscoll then tallied another assist as he can Chris Mini (Everett, MA) set up Pettingill for the Wolverines second goal of the night. Burke clinched the win with the third and final goal of the evening and he redirected a pass from the corner and buried the puck in the back of the net. McKeown and Steve Trychon (Stearling, MA) assisted Burke’s goal. Busa played in net for the second night with a shutout stopping all 40 shots the Academie St. Louis sent his way.

Coach Meserve was happy after the second game noting, “Best overall game of the year. We executed our systems, worked as a team and competed in all areas of the ice. John Busa was spectacular in net and the defense cleared away all the rebounds."

Bridgton took the ice Sunday afternoon for their final contest of the weekend with another game against the Academy St. Louie. This time, the Academie was ready for the Wolverines and picked up a 6-1 upset. Burke scored Bridgton’s only goal of the night with assists from Durkin and Johnny Sheil (Narragansett, RI). Brendan Gaetjins (Montclair, NJ) started in net for the Wolverines stopping 14 of 18 shots. Busa finished the game in net saving 22 of 24 shots.

Coach Meserve used the game to the team’s advantage commenting, "This was a great learning experience for us today. A lot of things we did correctly the day we just didn't execute today. We learned the hard way what happens when you don't show discipline and play unselfish hockey."

Jr. B Ties New England College J.V.

The Wolverines hit the road as the traveled to New England College to take on the Pilgrim's J.V. squad. The teams were very evenly matches skill wise, and the game resulted in a 3-3 tie. Chris Mini (Everett, MA) scored on a wrist shot from Marquise Cotten (Washington, DC). Colin Edwards (Winchester, MA) tallied the Wolverines second goal of the night as he took a feed in the slot from Kevin Seely (Berkley, MA) and Billy Smith (West Roxbury, MA). Seely then took a long pass from Matt Pagano (Cranston, RI) and turned it into Bridgton's final goal of the contest. John Busa (Billerica, MA) took 40 shots and saved 37 of them.

Jr. A Falls To Hebron Academy

Bridgton took their home ice against Hebron Academy for a big rivalry game this past weekend. Right away, the competition and skill level was high. Hebron took the lead early in the game, extending it to 5-0. Silas Rainville (Franklin, VT) netted Bridgton's first goal of the competition from Mike Marchionda (Hyde Park, MA) to lessen Hebron's lead. Bridgton kept the momentum going as Ryan Connors (Marshfield, MA) capitalized on a feed from Colin Edwards (Winchester, MA). Hebron then answered back to extend the lead to 6-2, followed by another Bridgton goal. For the Wolverines third tally, Billy Boudreau (Newburyport, MA) finished a pass from Dylan Larrow (Ludlow, MA) for the final effort of the game. Hebron netted one more before the end, resulting in a 7-3 loss for the Wolverines.

Jr. A Captures Big Win Over Phillips Exeter

The Jr. A hockey team traveled to Phillips Exeter Academy, who has always proven to be tough competition. The first period of play was evenly matched, with Bridgton first on the scoreboard. Silas Rainville (Franklin, VT) blocked a shot on a penalty kill, and turned it into the first goal of the night. Bridgton stayed strong, but Exeter was able to tally their own goal later in the first.

Early in the second frame, Bridgton gave up a two more penalties, resulting in Exeter's domination of the play. Bridgton stayed strong and killed the man down play to keep the score tied. Not long after, Bridgton worked the puck down the ice and scored with some scrappy play in front of Exeter's net. Jimmy Magrath (Medfield, MA) fired a shot, and Brendan Glynn (Quincy, MA) collected the roubound and put it away for the go ahead goal. The second goal had the Wolverines fired up, and they dominated for the remainder of the period.

Going into the third, Bridgton had yet another player in the penalty box, giving Exeter a man up for the first minute of play. Exeter had a hop in their step, but Bridgton successfully killed that penalty as well. The third period saw some physical play and the puck moved quickly up and down the ice. Exeter pulled their goalie in a final attempt to tie up the game, but Bridgton managed to hold on and secure the exciting 2-1 win.

In the game, Bridgton killed 14 penalties, going 100%. Pat Farrington (Sandwich, MA) played in net blocking 38 of 39 shots in three periods.

Jr. B Finds Success Over Yale University

The Jr. B hockey team visited Yale University where they took on the Bulldogs Club Team and took away a 7-1 win. Brian McKeown (Scarborough, ME) started off the night with assists from Chris Mini (Everett, MA) and John Sheil (Naragansett, RI). Next up, Matt Driscoll (Dedham, MA) collected a pass from Evan Gray (Norwell, MA), then fired it on net where Ethan Charny (Chicago, IL) tipped it in net. Danny MacInnis (Plymouth, MA) netted the Wolverines third goal of the game with assists from Steve Trychon (Stearling, MA) and Billy Smith (Boston, MA). Marquise Cotten (Washington, DC) set up Zach Pettingill (Scarborough, ME) for Bridgton’s next goal. Pettingill then set up Mini who finished a text book feed for goal number five. Charny netted his second goal of the night with assists from Dusty Burke (Shearborn, MA) and Sheil. Sheil rounded out the night scoring an unassisted goal to secure the 7-1 win. Brendan Gaitjins played in net saving 18 of 19 shots.

The team was on the road again on Sunday as they traveled to play the Boston Jr. Warriors, and suffered a 3-1 loss. Smith scored the Wolverines only goal of night night after collecting a pass from MacInnes on the move and carrying the puck to blast a shot from the point and slipping it past the Warriors goal on the low blocker side. John Busa (Billerica, MA) played in net for the Wolverines stopping 28 or 31 shots.

Jr. B Pounds SNHU

After a day off from competition, the Jr. B team hit the ice again, this time to take on Southern New Hampshire University at home. Following Friday night’s 9-1 win, Bridgton worked hard once again to secure a 9-2 win of SNHU’s Club team.

Right off the bat, Bridgton drew a penalty and Cody Norton (South Burlington, VT) scored with assists from Brian McKeown (Scarborough, ME) and John Sheil (Narragansett, RI). Matt Pagano (Cranston, RI) scored next off assists from Marquise Cotten (Washington, DC) and Chris Mini (Everett, MA). SNHU then scored, to close the gap. It didn’t take long however for Bridgton to pull ahead as Kevin Seely (Berkley, MA) scored a power play goal off a feed from Barry O’Neil (Falmouth, MA). Dusty Burke (Sherborn, MA) scored Bridgton’s final goal of the first period unassisted and shorthanded.

In the second period, SNHU held Bridgton to one goal with Dylan Larrow (Ludlow, MA) scoring off O’Neil and Matt Driscoll (Dedham, MA). SNHU also snuck in a goal to tie the period up, although they still trailed 5-2.

Bridgton came out on fire in the third period with Ethan Charny (Chicago, IL) scoring twice in one shift, both assists from Zach Pettingil (Scarborough, ME) and Burke. The line then rounded out the scoring with Pettingill nettings Bridgton’s final goal of the game from Charny and Burke. John Busa (Billerica, MA) played in net saving 31 of the 33 shots SNHU fired at him.

Coach Meserve called the game “another big win” commenting, " SNHU has some big college guys, and our guys had to battle for each and every puck. Now we still have to work on bringing the intensity each and every shift"

Stanstead Steals a Win From BA

As Bridgton took the ice against Stanstead Prep, they had their work cut out for them. The game was close throughout, and Bridgton lost by a small margin with a score of 3-2. Stanstead initially took the lead, but it was not long before Zach Wells (Hyannis, MA) scored Bridgton’s first goal of the night. With the game tied at one, Stanstead took the lead once again, lighting a fire under the Wolverines. On a faceoff in Bridgton's offensive zone, Sam Scannell (Glastonbury, CT) dropped the puck to Billy Boudreau (Newburyport, MA) who fired a wrist shot over the opposing goalies shoulder into the back of the net. The game stayed tied up going into the third period, however Stanstead was able to sneak one more goal to take the 3-2 win.

Up next, the Jr. A team will participate in the Warrior Classic starting Friday the 11th and continuing throughout the weekend.

Jr. A Slips Past Boston Jr. Bruins 4-3

The Jr. A hockey team took the ice against the Boston Jr. Bruins in what proved to be a close match up. Ryan Connors (Marshfield, MA) started off the night as the Wolverines took advantage of a powerplay and Connors finished a feed from Marco Spisso (Highland Falls, NY) to take a 1-0 lead four minutes into the game. Bridgton continued to dominate for the rest of the period, but the Bruins were a man up in the last minute of the period, and snuck a goal past goaltender Pat Farrington (Sandwich, MA) to tie up the game.

Taking the ice for the second period, the Wolverines were fired up and determined to take back the lead with Mike Marchionda (Hyde Park, MA) netting the go ahead goal with assists from Tommy Graham (Medfield, MA) and Cam Kennedy (Lynn, MA). Connors tallied his second goal of the game shortly after in the second period off a pass from John Sartell (Wakefield, MA) to take a 3-1 lead going into the third period.

Right off the bat in the final period, the Bruins scored closing the gap to one goal. After a few trips up and down the ice, Bridgton scored another powerplay goal as Zach Wells buried the Wolverine’s final puck of the night from Spisso and Connors. With a 4-2 lead, the Wolverines were not out of the clear. The Bruins kept up the tempo of the game, but Bridgton had no trouble hanging in there. Bridgton held the lead, even with the Bruins last goal with three seconds left in the game to secure a 4-3 win for the Wolverines.

Jr. B Dominates UNH Club 9-1

Friday night the Jr. B hockey team started off the weekend with a home game against the University of New Hampshire’s Club team. It was a well matched game, but Bridgton played a strong game both on offense and defense to secure the win.

Kevin Seely (Berkely, MA) started off the effort, netting Bridgton’s first goal with assists from Dan MacInnes (Plymouth, MA) and Cory Durkin (Narragansett, RI). Dusty Burke tallied Bridgton’s second goal after working hard to collect a rebound that was created by Barry O’Neil (Falmouth, MA) and Billy Smith (Boston, MA). Brian McKeown scored next on a power play from a Matt Pagano (Cranston, RI) and Durkin. On his next play, McKeown scored again, this time from Marco Spisso (Highland Falls, NY) and Pagano. Pagano then took a shot from the point off a feed from McKeown, and John Sheil (Narragansett, RI) created a great screen in front, netting Bridgton’s next goal of the game. Spisso netted Bridgton’s sixth goal, followed shortly by Sheil from O’Neil and Spisso. Pettingill buried the eighth goal of the game with assists from Matt Driscoll (Dedham, MA) and Burke. Ethan Charny (Chicago, IL) rounded out the scoring as he received a great pass from Marquise Cotten (Washington, DC) out front and finished the play for Bridgton’s ninth and final goal. Mike Gendreau (Medford, MA) played in net for the Wolverines stopping 27 of the 28 shots that came his way earning the 9-1 win.

Coach Meserve was happy with the results commenting, "It was the most complete game of the year and we executed our systems with perfection. Guys like Cotten, Sheil and Burke were our spark plugs tonight, always moving, always finishing checks"

Bridgton Sails Past the Maine Wave

The Jr. B hockey team took the ice against the Maine Wave this week and won with a score of 5-1. Bridgton took control of the game from the get go, and let up very few times throughout the game. With the Wolverines peppering the Wave with shots, five snuck by. Dan MacInnes (Plymouth, MA) led the scoring as he capitalized on a rebound set up by Kevin Seely (Berkley, MA) and Barry O’Neil (Falmouth, MA). Shortly after, Brian McKeown (Scarborough, ME) collected a rebound from Matt Pagano (Cranston, RI) and John Sheil (Narragansett, RI) to give BA a 2-0 lead. MacInnes tallied his second of the night off a rebound from Matt Driscoll (Dedham, MA) and Seely.

Later in the second period, Marquise Cotton (Washington, DC) and Chris Mini (Everett, MA) made a series of passes followed by a text book feed to Dylan Larrow (Ludlow, HS) who finished the play with a goal. With a 4-1 lead, Ethan Charny (Chicago, IL) tossed the puck high in the air above the goalie, and on a good bounce netted the fifth and final goal of the competition. John Busa (Billerica, MA) played in net for the Wolverines stopping 34 of the 35 shots that came his way.

While Bridgton played a great game, Coach Meserve was level headed after the win commenting, “We did just enough to win. Now we need to find the inner fire to learn how to compete for every puck.”

Jr. A Sweeps Rice AAA

Going into an important series with the Rice Memorial AAA team, the Junior A hockey team was ready to bring their season record back to .500 and build on their last win against the Albany Americans.

After a weekend off from hockey, Bridgton came out in the first five minutes with a little rust on their blades and made the game more difficult than it had to be. By the end of the first period BA had settled in and started to dominate play, controlling almost the entire first period in the Rice defensive zone, scoring two goals in the process. Zach Wells (Hyannis, MA) netted the Wolverines first goal of the game, followed by a Cam Kennedy (Lynn, MA) goal.

In the second period, both goaltenders showed a strong performance. Bridgton threw 18 shots in the second period with none crossing the line. Rice rallied behind their goalies strong play and tied up the score 2-2 at the end of the second period. Bridgton was determined to hold onto the game going into the third period, dominating the play once again firing 15 shots on net, yet not able to slip one past Rice’s goalie.

Heading into overtime, Bridgton capitalized on the first face off. Colin Edwards (Winchester, MA) split the two defenseman on a pass from Bobby Ganley (Weymouth, MA), threw a solid head fake on the goalie, and slid the puck in the open net for the game winner. The effort was not a complete one; however the ability of the BA hockey team to continue to rally ahead of Rice proved to be the eventual saving grace.

After Friday afternoon’s win, the Junior A team was back on the ice Saturday morning for the second game in the series with Rice AAA. The feel going into the game was that Bridgton was a better team, and if a consistent effort was given throughout the game a victory was all but guaranteed. From the first face-off, Bridgton dominated the play, but was frustrated early with the style of defense that Rice played forcing Bridgton to the outside and limiting the chances in prime scoring areas of the ice. That, coupled with a number of ill-timed penalties, made the game difficult to maneuver a consistent offensive attack. When playing at full strength BA continued to show its offensive superiority deep in the Rice zone.

However, despite Rice’s defensive style, Bridgton scored twice in the opening frame. The first by Michael Marchionda (Hyde Park, MA) with the assists going to the Tommy Graham (Medford, MA) and Tommy Carlaccini (South Burlington, VT). The second goal was a combination of the same line this time Graham scoring off assists from Marchionda and Carlaccini. Rice tightened the gap scoring late in the first period.

The second frame had the most scoring of the weekend, with both teams trading two goals. Bridgton’s goal were netted by Jimmy Magrath (Medford, MA) and Ganley. With a slight lead going into the third period, it was an all too similar feeling for Bridgton and history repeated itself with Rice tying the game with 30 seconds remaining in the contest sending the game into overtime for the second consecutive game. The overtime saw many good scoring opportunities, but it was Brendan Glynn (Quincy, MA) for the game winner in overtime.

Up next, the Jr. A team will take on the Eastern Kodiaks at home on Wednesday at 4:00 P.M.

Jr. B Stays Strong in Cyclone Tournament

This weekend, the Jr. B hockey team competed in the Cyclone Tournament in Hudson, NH. The team started out Friday night with a game against the Mass Mariners AAA suqad. It was a close match up that resulted in a 2-2 tie at the end of overtime. Zach Pettingill (Scarborough, ME) and Matt Pagano (Cranston, RI) tallied goals for Bridgton to keep them in the game. The game came down to a shootout, and Barry O’Neil (Falmouth, MA) netted the game winner for the Wolverines. John Busa (Billerica, MA) played in net and stopped 26 of 28 shots and denied all three shootout attempts.

The team hit the ice again the next day to play the Red Rangers AAA team. It was a close, well played game. Unfortunately Bridgton could not keep the momentum from the prior night going as they suffered a 3-2 loss. Dan MacInnes (Plymouth, MA) put away the Wolverines first goal, as Cody Norton (Essex, VT) scored the second in an attempt to take the lead. In net, Brendan Gaetjens (Montclair, NJ) stopped 24 of the 27 shots he faced.

In game three of the tournament, Bridgton faced the Portland Junior Pirates AAA team and walked away with a big 6-0 shutout win. Norton tallied Bridgton’s first two goals of the game on power plays. Ethan Charny (Chicago, IL) scored the Wolverines third goal, setting the win in motion. Billy Smith (Boston, MA), Kevin Seeley (Berkley, MA), and Norton collected the last three goals for Bridgton in the 6-0 win. Mike Gendreau (Medford, MA) played between the pipes and stopped the 12 shots that came his way.

Coach Meserve was complementary at the end of the weekend saying, "It was a solid performance overall. We have a lot of little things we still to work on, with our biggest issue being the team not finishing a complete game yet. When we are able to play a full 60 minutes, we are going to be a tough opponent."

Dan MacInnes (Plymouth, MA) scored the go ahead goal with assists from Dylan Larrow (Ludlow, MA) and Brian McKeown (Scarborough, ME). For the rest of the game, Bridgton was unstoppable. MacInnes tallied two more goals while Charny added his second. Additionally McKeown and Marco Spisso (Highland Falls, NY) scored twice while Chris Mini (Everett, MA), Dusty Burke (Sherborn, MA), Cody Norton (Essex, VT), and Zach Pettingill (Scarborough, ME) all added goals.

John Busa (Billerica, MA) started off in net and saved 8 of 9 shots for the win. Brendan Gaetjens (Montclair, NJ) also played between the pipes and stopped all nine shots that came his way.

Jr. A Splits With Albany Americans

The Jr. A hockey team hosted the Albany Americans this past weekend and split the pair of games. In the first contest of the weekend, Bridgton had a strong 4-0 lead which the held onto until the third period. Albany had a string of goals that Bridgton could not stop, and took the 5-4 win.

In the second game, Bridgton was determined to comeback from their upsetting loss the night before. The Wolverines dominated the play and came out on top with an 8-3 win. The Wolverines started to come together and play as a single unit. All in all, Bridgton outshot Albany 60-21. Coach Lounsbury was happy with the comeback, but commented “we can play a strong 40 minutes, or next goal is to play all 60.”

Jr. B Hits the Road

On Saturday the Jr. B hockey team started their weekend off with a big 7-1 win over the Worcester Wildcats. Chris Mini (Everett , MA) started things with assists from Marquise Cotten (Washington, DC) and Cody Norton (Essex, VT). John Sheil (Narragansett, RI), Zach Pettingill (Scarborough, ME), Dan MacInnes (Plymouth, MA), Brian McKeown (Scarborough, ME), Billy Smith (Boston, MA), and Norton netted the next six goals for Bridgton in the dominating win. John Busa (Billerica, MA) played in net for the Wolverines and saved 13 of the 14 shots that came his way.

On Sunday the Wolverines continued their weekend with a 7-3 loss to the Jr. Valley Warriors. Sheil put away Bridgton’s first goal of the game from Dusty Burke (Sherborn, MA) and Smith. MacInnes tallied his second goal of the weekend off a feed from McKeown and Cory Durkin (Narraganset, RI). Finally McKeown netted Bridgton’s third and final goal unassisted. Brendan Gaetjens (Montclair, NJ) played between the pipes and saved 38 of 45 shots he faced.

Coach Meserve commented after the second game, “We did some things very well this weekend, however, there is a lot of little things we have to fix. In both games, our attention to details cost us some opportunities”

Jr. B 2011-2012 Captains Announced

Coach Meserve is happy to announce Cory Durkin (Narragansett, RI) as Captain of this year’s Jr. B Hockey team and Billy Smith (Boston, MA) as Assistant Captain.

Durkin comes to Bridgton Academy from Narragansett High School where he played four years of hockey and soccer. Durkin was a two time captain of his hockey team and a senior captain of his soccer team. In 2007-2008 Durkin’s hockey team won the RI DIII State Championship.

“I feel lucky to have the opportunity to lead such a great group of hockey players and individuals,” said Durkin when asked about his selection. “It’s going to be a long season but if our team plays the way we should, we can be very successful.”

Joining Durkin is Smith who was also named Assistant Captain of his Brookline High School Varsity hockey team where he played for four years prior to attending Bridgton Academy.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun to watch our potential unravel” commented Smith. “We have a competitive schedule and we are going to have some real battles, but our coaches have prepared us well.”

Jr. B Falls to Walpole Express

The Jr. B hockey team took the ice this weekend to start off their season. They took on the Walpole Express but unfortunately could not skate away with the win. Billy Smith (Boston, MA) started things by finishing off a rebound after a low shot at the pads from John Sheil (Narragansett, RI). Kevin Seeley (Berkley, MA) then scored a power play goal set up by Dan MacInnes (Plymouth, MA) and Smith. Cody Norton (Essex, VT) tallied BA’s third and final goal in the contest after Matt Driscoll (Dedham, MA) and Ethan Charny (Chicago, IL) made some stellar plays and maneuvered around the neutral zone to set up Norton in front of the net. With a close 4-3 game with a minute left on the clock, BA pulled their goal tender for an extra skater in hope of tying the game up. Walpole score a lucky goal when clearing the zone that gave them a 5-3 victory of Bridgton.

Coach Meserve commented after the game, “there is a lot of room for improvement, but for our first game we played well.”

The Jr. B team will take the ice again as they travel to face the Valley Jr. Warriors on Sunday October 9^th at 1:30 P.M.

Jr. A Takes The Ice

The Jr. A hockey team had two games this past weekend against the New England Wolves. In both games, Bridgton kept the score close, but the Wolves scored an empty netter both times to secure a 4-2 and 3-1 win. Regardless of the score, the Wolverines worked hard for a full 60 minutes in each game and out shot the Wolves 70-63 by the end of the second game.

The Jr. A team had their first game of the season Saturday night against the New England Wolves. While BA took the lead initially, the Wolves were able to tie it up with a goal late in the first period. BA scored again, followed by another Wolves goal. With the score tied at 2-2, the Wolves pulled ahead in the third period. BA pulled their goaltender in hopes to score with a man up to tie the game and bring it into overtime. Unfortunately the Wolves scored on an empty net to steal the 4-2 win.

In game one, Brendan Glynn (Quincy, MA) and Ryan Connors (Marshfield, MA) netted Bridgton’s goals while Silas Rainville (Franklin, VT), Sam Scannell (Glastonbury, CT), and Jimmy Magrath (Medfield, MA) got the assists. Patrick Farrington (Sandwich, MA) started off in net with 13 saves followed by Mike Gendreau (Medford, MA) with 8, and Jordi Van Gaal (RyMenam, Belgium) with 10.

In the second game, Glynn tallied his second goal of the season off a pass from Colin Edwards (Winchester, MA). In this effort, Farrington made 9 saves, while Gendreau and Van Gaal each stopped 11 shots.

Coach Lounsbury was pleased at the end of the weekend saying "I'm happy with the outcome. We have been on the ice for a week and competed with a very well coached disciplined squad, we never gave up and played tough. I'm excited to see what we can do with a little more time on the ice."

Up next, the Jr. A team will take on St. Foye at home on Saturday October 8th at 7:00 P.M.

Parents' Weekend is Here!

Finally, Parents' Weekend has arrived! The guys have been busy in the classroom and on the ice, and it's time they show off their hard work! There is a lot going on this weekend, and it will be great fun!

The hockey teams have some big games this weekend. First the Jr. A team will take on the New England Wolves at 7:00 P.M. on Satuday night. They will face them again at 12:00 P.M. on Sunday. The Jr. B team will play Walpole Express at 3:00 P.M. on Sunday. We hope to see all family and friends there!!

Black and Grey Scrimmage Is A Success!

The hockey team took the ice this week for a Black and Grey scrimmage in preparation for their upcoming season, which starts off this coming weekend for Parent's Weekend. The game drew in a good crowd of students, and it was great to see the team on the fresh ice. The game was so close, with a 4-4 tie at the end, that the fans started to cheer for a shoot out! Not wanting to dissapoint, the teams choose respective players for one on one's with the goalies. It was a great night for everyone, and the team is definitly fired up for the season!

Preseason Is Underway!

The 2011-2012 Wolverine hockey team arrived this week on campus and has been training hard to prepare for the up coming season. They even found some time between sessions to help beautify campus by weeding the Hall of Fame Garden. Check out some pictures from the past few days!
